8 for 8

This year at school, there is a book challenge called 8 for 8. It is extremely similar to last year’s 7 for 7 book challenge, except this one has eight books and more things you can do to enter.

The books are:

  1. Scavengers by Darren SimpsonImage result for scavengers book
  2. The Skylarks War by Hilary McKayImage result for skylarks war book
  3. The Twisted Tree by Rachel BurgeImage result for twisted tree book
  4. The Island by M. A. BennetImage result for the island book m a bennett
  5. Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow by Siobhan CurhamImage result for don't stop thinking about tomorrow book

  7. Everything All At Once by Steven Camden (aka Polarbear)Image result for everything all at once book
  8. And The Ocean Was Our Sky by Patrick NessImage result for and the ocean was our sky book

These eight books are all set from different perspectives and times. Everything All At Once is a book of poetry telling a story about school life. The Skylarks war has romance and history. There are many other things that make each book unique.

The things you can do to enter are:

  • Film a book trailer video
  • Make a piece of artwork
  • Write a piece of creative writing
  • Perform a performance
  • Write a blog or a review
  • Film a booktalking video
  • Or absolutely anything else!

These have to be based on your favourite 8 for 8 book, to try and encourage more people to read that book.

Thirteen chairs by Dave Shelton is a horror book with lots of different stories inside. However, instead of having a collection of stories on their own, Dave made a story to tell the stories to try and make the reader feel more scared and hooked to the book. The stories are all written in a different style. They are also true to the characters that are telling them to the audience.

I didn’t like all of this book because I couldn’t understand the old language in one of the stories. And I don’t particularly like horror stories. I also didn’t like the cliffhangers that were never finished, because it gives you a sense of anger at the book, with the reader thinking ‘ARRGH what happens next?! I want to know! I NEED TO KNOW!’

My favourite character was the main character, Jack. I liked him because he was being brave and scared the ghosts who were trying to scare him. The ghosts were telling spooky stories, but Jack told them about being alive and well. This made him special and different from all the other characters, as he was not scared to death as he was supposed to be but outplaying the ghosts at their own game.

In conclusion, I don’t like all of this book and would give it three of five stars. I would recommend this book to advanced readers and people that like horror stories.

This is part of the 7 for 7 book challenge. To see the main 7 for 7 post click here.

7 for 7

At school, there is a book challenge called 7 for 7. It is designed to make participants better at writing about what they are reading. To complete the challenge, specially chosen Year 7’s (including me) have to read 7 books and write reviews about all of them.

The books are

  1. The 1,000 Year Old Boy by Ross Welford
  2. 928 Miles From Home by Kim Slater
  3. The Girl Who Drank The Moon by Kelly Barnhill
  4. The Island At The End Of Everything by Kiran Millwood Hargrave
  5. The Secret Keepers by Trenton Lee Stewart
  6. Thirteen Chairs by Dave Shelton
  7. Welcome To Nowhere by Elizabeth Laird

To see my reports on these books click on the name. If it doesn’t work I haven’t done a review on that book yet.

Scratch – Homework Inventions; The Book Reader

This is what I created for my homework.

The homework task was to create an invention that would help with school life. The Book Reader would be helpful because it could read to the class while teachers did something else. It would be made of plastic and rechargeable with some solar panels as well.

Press the on and off buttons and the other buttons.

This is the link to the project on the scratch website. It works in full screen unlike this embedded version in the post.

The Planet Problem

National Young Writers Award

At school we had this competition, the National Young Writers Award, where you had to write a 500 word story about what it might be like in 3017. Here’s my story:

The Planet Problem

Over the hills, there was an enormous banana milkshake house with a Kitkat poking out of it and who lived in it you ask? Well, only a man called Shakana or as his friends called him Nana. Nana was a Gaygun, a species of human, which can live to be nine hundred and ninety nine million years old. Nana was a kind, elderly worker who sold… yes you guessed it: Banana milkshakes with Kitkat’s in! Shakana also invented a suit (that he used often) called the Inveople. The last Inveople had not done anything, this new one worked when it had been filled up with banana milkshakes. First, let me tell you what the Inveople does; the Inveople makes you really strong and Invisible, when wearing it! Shakana also had the latest transport: the Rhubarb, powered by rhubarb crumble. In all, Shakana was a happy man and got lots of customers because, he made the best milkshakes in the world. He had robots, which sold milkshakes in every town, village or city.

After he’d bought the rhubarb, he decided to swap the Earth and Mercury’s positions so; he could see life develop in different years. However, there was one problem: he would wipe out all the organisations on Earth and that would be horrendous!!! Swiftly, he made nine hundred and ninety-nine million, nine hundred and ninety-nine thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine litres of rhubarb crumble. When he had stored it all in the fuel tank of the rhubarb –it can fit anything in- he let the Earth in. Although afraid, the people on Earth, stupidly, didn’t try to do anything. “THIS IS BAD!!!”Everyone was saying. Everywhere was chaotic. Even though, the world was about to end, lots of people tried to get on with daily life. They did it to get enough money to make rhubarb crumbles to power their rhubarbs and to calm down. Everything was being sold; people were crazy but every one decided to get one thing especially: the Producer. The Producer produces anything in an instant and’s very small and handy.

Well, because everybody was buying a Producer all was bad; people had to make more Producers by using a Producer to make a Producer to give to the people without a Producer. The stalls were nowhere near as chaotic except all Nana’s milkshake stalls. You couldn’t get any in Producer’s because they were too hard to make, so everyone was buying them. Anyway, Shakana was having another problem, he couldn’t move the Earth or Mercury. Thank goodness, the worlds were saved, which was an enormous relief for everyone as they could live on. Shakana was furious so he packed up and decided to go to Mercury with his milkshakes for aliens (aliens love milkshakes.)

Shakana knew that aliens loved milkshakes. He got into his fully loaded (so he thought) rhubarb and it wouldn’t go. He tried again. Nothing. He checked the fuel, empty. His storage of rhubarb crumble? Empty. OH NO…

Hope you like it.

BFG Pantomime With School

On Friday 4th December I went to the Octagon theatre to watch The BFG from the book by Roald Dahl.

The BFG (standing for Big Friendly Giant) had huge, orange hair as dark as an orange.

My favourite part of the whole pantomime was when they were in Buckingham palace contacting the BFG from the lawn with a gigoontic (gigantic) iPhone. Here are some pictures of a leaflet I took home.

Children In Need

School

On Friday 13th November at school we could dress up as a super hero, have mad hair or wear spotty clothes.

I went as Batman and I wore a Children In Need badge with spots on it.

Bake Sale

At home I made some Lemon and Vanilla cupcakes for the school bake sale with Smarties on top and sugar paper Pudsey’s.

I made them by mixing butter, sugar and flour then mixed the vanilla extract in with the eggs.

My favourite part of making them was icing them and putting the smarties and Pudsey’s in the cupcakes.

Sky High Adventure

On Friday 16th October 2015 I went to Sky High Adventure at Droylsden near Manchester.

Sky High Adventure

When I got there I was terribly exited to start doing things that I was trembling all over!

Bouldering

Similar to a climbing wall I climbed up and did things the instructer shouted. (e.g. “Take your right foot and left hand off. Put your right hand on a green hold” or “Rub your nose with your right hand!)”. Then I jumped off the wall onto a colosall black mattress thing.

CLIP ‘N CLIMB

Clip’n’climb is fun for all climbers to have a brilliant time, with harnesses I was safe, but made sure I had clipped onto my harnesses correctly, so I was ready to climb.

Climbing

Soft Play

The Soft Play course has lots of obstacles, slides, things to climb,a zipwire and loads of other things to do there is even a football pitch with two nets and a basketball goal with a ball.

Activity choices are:

  • Spiral Slide
  • Rotating Puzzle
  • Baby Balance
  • Spider’s Web
  • Balance Beams
  • The 2 Lane Slide
  • Sports Pitch

    Soft Play

I did all of the things in it.

HIGH ROPES

In the heights of Sky High I wasn’t afraid, because I pretended to fly as I defeated the thrilling obstacle course in the air. BUT I DID NOT LOOK DOWN!!!! From Ropes to tunnels and lots of other obstacles I battled my way through the High Rope course.

You are sure to have fun participating in the Wonderful things at Sky High Adventure like I did! To find out more click here.

My favourite thing was the Clip’n’climb, because it’s challenging and they are all different levels for climbers any age. Just make sure when you go on the Soft Play you don’t walk into the Toddlers Area that has a ball pool!
